I’ve always been delighted when I managed to learn something new or understand something I hadn’t grasped before. It didn’t matter whether it was about history, computers, technology more broadly, or management – the very fact that I knew more, understood more was always a source of joy for me. And it still is.
But I figured out fairly quickly that not everyone is like this – or rather, that actually few people are like this. This is clearly visible in the craving for ready-made recipes, various “shortcuts” and “magic spells” that would allow achieving this or that without the effort of deep understanding of the subject, without acquiring the knowledge necessary to develop a solution.
People don’t really want knowledge, but only its fruits.
That’s why AI is such a fatal trap for humanity – most people will prefer to “outsource” thinking to the AIs and quickly get just the final result. A magic spell. A ready-made recipe they won’t understand.
“I say your civilization, because as soon as we started thinking for you it really became our civilization, which is of course what this is all about” – Agent Smith said in The Matrix. Exactly – once we hand over the exploration of knowledge and learning to machines, will it still be our civilization?
